He woke up. So did, Spotty, his cat. ... Good morning, Spotty. Danny lived by the sea side, in a little village, on a beautiful bay. His love for the water led him into a great adventure. This adventure teaches us the first and most important lesson ... ... that God wants everybody to know. Someday, you and I will have a sailboat, Spotty. You wait and see. Ah yes, Danny loved the water; so did Spotty. Or at least it seemed so. Of course, cats don't care much for water. One day as the two friends walked along the beach, something happened which in a way began the whole adventure. Spotty, this looks like a boat. Picking up a piece of driftwood may not sound like much of an adventure, but Danny's mind was full of dreams and ideas. Dreams and ideas, you know, plus work are what make most ... of the best adventures possible. As Danny took his little boat down onto the beach, Rudy and a couple of members of his gang watched. You'll learn more about this bad boy a little later. Actually, this first little boat was not quite what you would call ... the beginning of Danny's great adventure. Danny got upset and cried too easily, especially for a boy. That's why Rudy teased him so much. He liked to make Danny cry. Like to ride in my sailboat, Danny? Fishermen, and others who worked and played on the water liked Danny. One young man by the name of Bobby, often took him for rides in his sailboat. As they skimmed out onto the water ... Danny liked to imagine himself as a brave sea captain. The rides were always too short. Bobby took me sailing, Mama. ... That was nice, Danny, wasn't it? Will you read me a sailing story, please? I'd be glad to, Danny. ... Climb up here. Once upon a time, there was a young sailor. Let me tell Danny a real sailing story, daughter. I'm full of tales of the sea. ... Okay, grandpa. Danny, I sailed the ocean when I was a boy like you. Sailing was the only kind of sea travel back in those days. That's right. We carried mail and loads of trade goods to China. And we sailed for weeks with nothing but the sea and the sky for our companions. Then we'd see strange and exotic vessels, that were nothing like our own. And then ... we ... ah..... Not only did Danny's grandfather fall asleep but Danny fell asleep too. And almost always, after hearing his grandfather tell about life on the sea, Danny had dreams of himself as a sea captain. "Thar she blows!" ... Wake up, Danny. It's time for bed. Danny liked sailboats best. But he also loved the big ships ... which passed by his little village several times each day. Wouldn't that be something - to be the captain of one of those ships? Then one afternoon down at the beach, his big adventure began. It's one of my boats. You want to buy it? Yes, Mr. Boat Maker. Which one do you like? ... This one. It took me half a day to build that one. I'm asking $20 for it. I have the money. I can pay all of it now. ... Then the boat is yours. You must have worked hard to earn this much money. I didn't work at all. My father gave it to me. Hey look - a crybaby! ... Yeah, Rudy. Should we give him a bottle? Who is that crying? ... Danny is a crybaby! ... Danny is a crybaby! Why are you crying? ... Huh? Oh, I get it. You want to buy a boat but you don't have any money. Is that right, son? What's your name? Danny. That's a nice name. I wouldn't mind having a name like that myself. Say, I could sure use a helper here. I could use one very much. I'll only be here for 2 more weeks. And the work is too much for me. Why don't you help me. You wouldn't need to do much. I'll show you how to use my tools. You can make a boat of your own. Could I?! ... Sure. Just so it doesn't take longer than 2 weeks. Didn't the boatmaker know what a sissy that Danny was? What a crybaby?... Move those boats closer together, Danny, ... ... so I'll have room for these new ones I just made. You've got strong arms, Danny. It takes me twice the time to saw one of those boards. That's right, Danny. Just pile that wood over there. You're such a good worker, I'm going to pay you as well as let you use my tools. Select any piece of wood you want, Danny. And I'll show you how to start making your boat. Danny was so excited he was almost afraid it was one of his happy dreams. How terrible to wake up and find that all this wasn't really happening at all. Be very careful. I'll show you. That's right, Danny. Be careful though. It wasn't a dream. He really was making a beautiful little boat all his own. Owww! ... What's the matter, Danny? We'll fix that. ... Be more careful, Danny. Your boat is coming along just fine. At last the boat was finished. It was beautiful. Why it's as fine as any of my boats. Take your boat down to the water, Danny, but be careful. Here's the money you've earned. ... Thank you! It's enough to buy a fine boat. Except that you've made such a good one yourself, Danny boy. What do you want, Rudy? ... Awww, nothing. Oh no. Rudy again. Jealous. Full of hatred for Danny. Rudy's jealousy and hatred were bigger than ever now, ... ... because of that beautiful new boat. How could "Crybaby" make such a good boat?, Rudy wondered. Could it be that Danny wasn't as much of a crybaby as he thought? Maybe he could steal the boat. ... It made him very angry to see Danny so happy. Rudy's jealousy and hatred, as we shall see, ... ... are also a part of this important lesson that we can learn through Danny's adventure. Guess what Danny dreamed about almost every night? His boat, of course. Then one beautiful day Danny awakened full of excitement. Even Spotty sensed the excitement. Excited though he was about the boat he had made, ... Danny still took time for some of his very special friends who lived by the water. Where did Mr. Greenback go this time? Oh, there he is. ... Today he didn't have much time to play. Oh yes, there was one more. ... Old Sam Seagull. He'd known Sam as long as he could remember. ... Look at that boat sail. ... It glided across the water ... ... as smoothly as one of the big ships that grandpa used to travel in. I've got to do something, Rudy told himself. I can't let "Crybaby" have so much fun with his boat. Danny couldn't remember a time when he was happier than at this moment. So happy, and so contented. ... He began to feel sleepy. ... And that was just what mean old Rudy needed to carry out his ugly plan. And so, as Danny dreamed of himself sailing the high seas, his beautiful boat ... which he had made with his own hands ... drifted farther and farther away. ... At last Danny awakened. "My boat!" he cried out, "My boat!" ... Who could have done such a terrible thing? Farther and farther the little boat drifted out across the water. ... Farther and farther and farther. ... He was sure he would never see it again. Now Rudy was happy. If you can call being mean some kind of happiness. Of course, Danny wasn't sure who had done this naughty thing. But when he went to an old lighthouse along the beach. The lighthouse keeper was a special friend. He found out who had cut the string. Have a look through my telescope, the lighthouse keeper said. Maybe you can see where your boat goes. Maybe it will drift toward shore again so someone can find it. What started out to be the happiest day in Danny's life turned out ... ... to be just about the very saddest. He was so sad, he couldn't even cry. But remember Danny's adventure, interesting though it is by itself, teaches us an important lesson that God wants everybody to know. I'll tell you about that lesson in just a little bit. It really is important; very, ... very important. Danny's mother knew right away something had happened to the boat. Even Spotty seemed to understand. Being such a wise lady though, ... ...Danny's Mother pretended at first as though nothing had happened. Take a bath young man. A bath? ... What boy likes to take a bath? Well actually he didn't mind baths too much. Of course, nothing could make him forget the terrible thing that had happened. Something like a bath though might help him to not think quite so much about it. Yes, he tried to get his mind off of what had happened. He really tried. But he was still only thinking about one thing: boats. And especially his little lost boat! Danny! ... Lunch! ... I'm coming! ... By now, his mother knew what had happened. Such a nice lady she was. She began to think of ways to bring at least a little bit of happiness ... ... into her son's unhappy life. Whose birthday, huh? ... It's Spotty's birthday, Danny. Hey, it's your birthday today, Spotty. What a wonderful idea. A birthday party for Spotty. It wasn't just like having a party for a cat. ... But for a real friend. That's what Spotty was. ... Not just an animal. ... But a real friend. Slowly time passed. ... Days became weeks. ... Soon Summer was gone. Yet Danny never forgot his - little lost boat. He was sure he would never see it again. Oh! ... That's my boat! His boat - his little lost boat! ... That had to be the one he had made. It had to be. ... But where had it come from? Why was it here in the hobby store? That's not your boat. Someone brought it in here. I bought it from him. ... But it's my boat, sir. I made it. You may have made it. But it is my boat now. How much money do you want for it? Huh, mister? It's a beautiful boat. But I am only asking $20. Suddenly Danny got an idea. The hobby store owner couldn't give him the boat. But he could sell it to him. Sure. ... Danny could buy back his little lost boat. When he counted his money he found that he didn't have nearly enough. But what could he do? ... Once again his nice mother helped him. You've spent your allowance, Danny. But I'll pay you for doing some chores. Come and play with us, his friends would say, after school and on weekends. He wanted to play too - but work, not play, ... would earn him the money needed to buy back the little lost boat. At last the wonderful day came, when he had enough money ... ... to go down to the hobby store. Why, it was even a happier time than the day when he first finished making the boat. Hey ... Needless to say, Rudy and his naughty friends were very much surprised. They didn't expect this to happen. They thought the boat was lost forever. You really are my boat. I made you. ... Then I lost you. But now I have bought you back again. ... Did you hear what Danny said? That's exactly the lesson that God wants us to learn. You see, He made us. Then because of our sins, He lost us. That's why Jesus came into this world. On the Cross, Jesus bought us back again. God made us. ... He lost us. ... But Jesus bought us back again. Have you asked God to forgive your sins? Have you thanked the Lord Jesus for dying for you on the Cross? He made us. He lost us. But He bought us back again. ... "You are not your own: you were bought at a price. ... ... Therefore, honor God with your body."
